Why Does My TV Signal Keep Breaking Up?

Common causes of Freeview pixelation and drop-outs — and what actually fixes them.

Pixelation on Freeview usually means the TV is not getting a clean enough signal. Causes include a damaged or waterlogged aerial, corroded connectors, a cable crushed in a loft, a failing amplifier, or an aerial that has turned in high winds.

Interference from new buildings, trees, or temporary transmitter works can also play a part. Retuning alone rarely fixes a physical fault — if channels disappear again after every retune, the aerial system needs testing.

We use meters to measure signal quality, then repair or replace the weak point. That might be a new flylead, a bracket tighten and realign, or a full aerial swap where the old unit is past it.
